One summer, I was in my twenties, my mom helped me paint my house. I despaired of ever being done. But she kept on so upbeat and positive. We painted my house a bright cheery yellow that I love every time I drive up. I wish so badly I could go back and thank her for that. I still remember how her voice was ALWAYS so bright when she answered the phone to find it was me. That love is like gold, precious malleable fantastic and so beautiful. I was lucky. Here’s to all the moms and their girls out there: be friends, work Hard at it if you have to, it’s worth it.
Kate, that is so sweet! You’ve reminded me about when my Mom came to my first apartment and got down on her hands and knees to polish my wood floor. It shone! I’ll never forget her help. Thank you for appreciating & inspiring other good memories of Moms in action! (My Mom was smart, but practical. Aren’t Moms amazing?)
My birth mother left this life in the early 60′s. My sister and I were adopted by a very abusive couple. I remember my beloved mother sitting on the side of my bed (in spirit) comforting me and giving me love. I received the courage to live another day. I knew that I was loved. I knew she would never leave me. I knew that this time of trial would pass and my life would have meaning beyond the suffering. I am 50 today and I have been a nurse for 20+ years, helping others through their time of suffering.
My sister and I were my Mom’s pride and joy. Raising us and creating such a dynamic family life were her career. I am incredibly grateful for the hard work and passion that she put into it. More importantly, she did it with joy. She organized all the family get together activities, all the beach vacations. I grew up on a little island and it was the norm to spend lots of time at the beach. Now I live in the middle of the US and I can deeply appreciate those vacations along the ocean. One of the most deeply touching memories is when we left home for college. Almost every weekend we would drive the 45 minutes trip from college to home. On a Sunday, my Mom would pack a box full of little containers of food for us. She wanted to make sure her girls had “good” food for the week while staying in the dorm. What my Mom did for my sister and I is priceless. God bless her!
